Release Notes – 28 January 2022 - Version 2.1
(changes from v2.0)
USER INTERFACE & MISCELLANEOUS
FIXED: In certain cases the map/UI presented lag when multiple units/contacts were selected.
Saving and loading a scenario are both faster. This is particularly evident in large scenarios.
The “Red X” (Direct-X device context lost) issue when resuming the machine from sleep/hibernate/screen-lock has been resolved.
Interactive analysis settings can now be changed directly within the application by using the new “Interactive Analysis Settings” window (Editor Interactive Analysis Settings):
This makes it possible to change various settings for event export without needing to restart the application. Using the [WritableRoot]\Config\EventExport.ini config file is also still supported.
The Mission Editor window layout has been revised, with the unassigned and per-mission assigned units windows now stacked vertically (on top of each other) instead of horizontally side-by-side. This makes it easier to read the full unit names (which may differ only towards their ends) as well as supplementary per-unit information (loadout, status etc.). In addition, the panels now include per-category filter buttons that allow displaying only the selected types of platforms.
The Message Log window has been redesigned to be easier to interpret. Instead of grouping the displayed messages by type, messages to be displayed can now be filtered in/out by individual type, by toggling the buttons labelled with their respective type. In the example below, all message-type buttons are green, which means that all types are enabled for display:
New UI feature: Quick manual weapon allocation. While having an own-unit selected, shift + right-click on contact, and select "Engage with:". This will present a submenu with all suitable weapons to engage with:
Additional shift + right-click options:
- Drop Target
- Investigate (ie. manouver to intercept & identify but do not engage)
- Refuel To Tanker
- Join Group As Escort (for aircraft only)
- RTB
- Assign New Home Base
The Reference Points Manager window now has additional features for no-navigation zone and exclusion zones.
In WRA options, it is now possible to set the auto-fire range and self-defence range as percentages of maximum (nominal) range rather than absolute figures:
You can now load/save doctrine/ROE templates in XML format through the GUI ("Doctrine/ROE" window, "General" tab):
You can now configure whether the simulation will pause or not when opening the DB-viewer window. This can be set through [WritableRoot]\Config\Command.ini (PauseOnDBView=True/False)
You can now set the speed of ground units to be displayed in knots, (land) miles per hour or kilometers per hour. This settings is available on the “Game Options” window and is persisted on Command.ini.
The “Multiplayer” button is now always visible on the start windows.
Cargo-pickup actions can now be cancelled (through the unit context menu).
Separated autosave for each scenario: The "Resume from autosave" fuunction now fetches from the new Autosaves folder the latest modified root scenario folder that contains the specific autosaves then uses the autosave.scen of this folder. If you want to load an autosave from a specific scenario, you can select a scenario in the "load scenario" window and a "load autosave" button will appear if a valid autosave exists.
When “Isolated POV” mode is active, the message log lists only messages generated by the selected unit (this reflects the fact that, from the unit’s POV, no other messages are received).
New mission editor UI feature: Generate flight plan for assigned aircraft:
It is now possible to quickly enable/disable all range-rings:
UI addition on Mission Editor: Added a new behaviour and toggle to (optionally) force strike team member to focus on target instead of engaging opportunity targets:
This can help prevent situations where the strike flight gets too distracted from its mission or stays too long in the area chasing others targets, instead of a “one pass and gone” behavior.
The “Edit Cargo” window has been significantly improved:
The window now allows you to spawn units and have them added directly into cargo (the “Database” tab, shown as currently selected in the screenshot), OR alternatively select existing units from the map to load into cargo (the “Units” tab.) Loading units 'from the map' allows the scenario designer to fully customize/group the unit(s) themselves before placing them into cargo.
In the example screenshot, if the “Units” tab were selected you can observe the AAVP-7 and the inf platoon (visible above the form in the screenshot) in the list of existing units that can be loaded.
On the window itself, the leftmost column shows the state of the current cargo host -- a list of all cargo items along with a summary of how much capacity it has remaining.
The “Unload Selected” button will remove the selected units from cargo and place them back to the map -- either where they were previously (if they were loaded from the map) or where the cargo host is located.
The “Delete Selected” button deletes the selected units from the scenario.
You can filter the list of units/db items via the 'filter by' checkbox and text field on the bottom right.
“Custom Name” allows setting the base name of the unit(s) being created and loaded, in a similar fashion to the “Callsign” field on the “Edit Aircraft” window. The counter sets the quantity to create and load. A “#” hash is automatically appended to unit names when they are created and placed into cargo.
“Load Selected” will create the unit(s) and place them into the host's cargo.
The revised “Edit Cargo” window supports ground units, mobile facilities, and (on the Database source tab) mounts.
Reference points are now drawn with outlines.
New UI feature: You can now plot a course for the selected unit directly by right-clicking anywhere on the map (RTS-style). Hold shift to plot multiple waypoints in succession.
You can now de-select all currently selected units by left-clicking anywhere on the map.
When setting the orientation for a ground facility, you can now also optionally set the orientation for its “pier area”, if applicable.
FIXED: Message log causes general UI slowdown/hiccup when lots of messages are generated.
SIMULATION & MODELING
NEW FEATURE: Radar resolution cell. (See this page for background: https://www.radartutorial.eu/01.basics/The%20resolution%20cell.en.html ).
If multiple units are located within the resolution cell, the radar will detect only one of them. This feature confers an extra advantage to higher-frequency radar systems, as they are better able to distinguish between closely-clustered targets.
NEW FEATURE: Radar vertical scan angle limits. Radars can only look up/down to a maximum of 30 degrees. This restriction severely curtails their ability to search for targets high above or well under them, and has indeed been used and exploited historically (Example: https://theaviationgeekclub.com/the-story-of-the-giraffe-missions-and-how-iraf-mirage-f-1-fighter-bombers-were-able-to-shoot-down-four-iriaf-f-14-tomcats ). There is an exception, however: Phased-array radars can scan upwards close to the vertical limit.
NEW FEATURE: Phased array off-boresight gain reduction. Phased-array radars (PESA/AESA) suffer from gain degradation (hence effective range reduction) when attempting to detect targets far off the antenna boresight, both on the horizontal and vertical plane.
This schematic shows the coverage difference between a mechanical-scan set (APG-68(V)9) and two AESA radar options for the F-16:
Note the severe drop on high off-boresight detection range on the two AESAs because of the gain reduction.
In addition to the changes in the radar code, the difference is also displayed on the map:
(The "flower" coverage pattern on the ship is because of the individual SPY-1 faces, each of which is a PESA antenna)
NEW FEATURE: Daisy-chain weapon datalinks. Weapons can now directly connect to each other instead of always connecting to a firing/guiding platform. A new enumerated flag (#4000 – Daisy Chain Capability) has been added to the EnumCommCapability table to facilitate this. This behavior can be used by weapons to model comms extension, contact sharing etc.
NEW FEATURE: Launcher occupied. Certain weapons occupy their launcher while they are enroute (e.g. most wire-guided torpedoes & ATGMs). The mount cannot be reloaded before the weapon is destroyed one way or another. (Requires DB3000 v489+)
NEW FEATURE: Loitering weapons. Two types of loitering weapons are modelled; aerodynamic and parachute. Aerodynamic weapons in DB3000 v492 are:
625 |
ADM-141B TALD [Chaff] |
881 |
ADM-141C TALD [Active RF] |
1102 |

3917 |
Rapid Dragon Weapon Pallet [6x AGM-158C LRASM] |
3918 |

Loitering weapons can be fired either directly against a target (as standard non-loitering weapons) or BOL-fired (Ctrl+F1) into a set of coordinates and then hunt for a target either autonomously or under direct control, depending on their communication status.
Significant changes to sonar model. Based on feedback from numerous SMEs (special recognition to Rick Rather, USN [Ret]), a number of substantial tweaks & improvements have been absorbed in the sonar propagation logics. In summary:
The thermocline layer is generally weaker than before for a given location, and completely stops being effective at 70+ degrees north or south latitude.
The minimum bottom depth necessary to achieve converge zone (CZ) propagation is sharply increased per given location, and is no longer static but dependent on latitude. CZs are now also impossible at 70+ degrees north or south latitude. This diagram contrasts the minimum depth requirement for CZ in the previous and new model:
Most under-layer sonars (SOSUS/SURTASS excluded) lose the 2x detection range bonus afforded by the deep sound channel. This sharply reduces the in-DSC detection ranges of VDS & towed arrays.
Wholly-reworked ballistic missile trajectory model. The BM model now uses true Keplerian equations resulting in highly-accurate trajectory profiles for each range segment (minimum-energy trajectory is assumed). This is particularly visible in intermediate- and long-range ballistic shots.
New facility type: Surface (flat) & underground. This type represents facilities that reside primarily underground while still being partially surface-accessible (and thus attackable). Such facilities include:
Ballistic missile silos (and old Nike-Hercules!)
Some command / LCC bunkers
Retractable forts & coastal defences (e.g. ERSTA)
This type of facility can be damaged/destroyed in two ways:
Numerous relevant facilities use this new type in DB3000 v492+.
The new-style ground vehicles can now be loaded/unloaded as cargo on suitable cargo-carrier platforms. This makes it possible, for example, to unload ACV or AAV amphibious assault vehicles from motherships such as LHA/LHDs as part of amphibious operations.
Ground units now have fuel records and can refuel & replenish. If they run out of fuel, they are immobilized until they can refuel. They can also request replenishment, for both fuel and ammo/stores from suitable providers (e.g. fuel-bowser trucks or ammo carriers). If they can move to the UNREP vehicles on their own they will do so; otherwise the UNREP vehicles will rendezvous with them.
Submarines can now also perform UNREP operations.
RHIBs and other small boats can now land any units they carry (e.g. troops) via the cargo orders/mission menu.
General improvements in simulation engine performance, particularly in large/complex scenarios.
AI-controlled units can now launch tactical air decoys (e.g. MALD/TALD).
Improvements in HGV trajectory
a) The vehicle release point is 1/10th of the launch range, not halfway to the target
b) The maximum down-angle during pre-glide dive is 30 degrees (not 70)
Tactical nuclear weapons arm themselves only after they have travelled more than half the distance to the target.
FIXED: Mid-flight weapon sticking with its launching aircraft if the aircraft performs boresight checks against target.
Fixed: Readying immediatly an aircraft should retain the hosting hangar for any non-carrrier air facility.
Biological entities have an improved speed-dependent sound signature logic.
The 2-line element (TLE) parser for satellite orbits is now more robust, supporting more extended orbit types like artificial perfectly-circular ones.
Contacts detected by out-of-contact (OOC) units are designated with a [OOC] prefix and a randomized autoincrement, to distinguish from on-grid contacts.
Weapon/damage tweak: Penetrating weapons (e.g. BLU-109/113) that near-miss will burrow into the earth before detonating (important for proximity shock damage to underground/underwater targets). In addition, surface targets can now be damaged by the shock generated from underground detonations, if they are close enough.
FIXED: Issues with DLZ checks against targets with very high horizontal speed (e.g. low-orbit satellites).
FIXED: Passive sonar masking checks can cause significant slowdown in scenarios with numerous underwater targets (e.g. Nothern Inferno #1, large number of SOSUS detections).
FIXED: Several thread-timing issues in high CPU usage cases.
FIXED: Fine-grained pathfinding over large distances may cause out-of-memory error.
When a unit is prosecuting a contact while on a patrol mission, if the contact is lost, the unit will reset its “ignore plotted course when attacking” (IPC) setting to “Yes”, so that it can investigate any additional contacts.
FIXED issue with vertical-plane boresight checks preventing attacks with LGBs or EO-guided bombs.
FIXED: Ships at pier were not repairing the bridge & rudder components.
FIXED: Submarines sometimes were not structurally repaired while in port.
FIXED: Pier areas were ignored for purposes of pathfinding & collision.

New ActiveUnit wrapper methods:
au:getUnitMount(string mountguid) returns the specified mount, if it exists on the unit.
New Mount wrapper property:
mount.weapons (table) a list of all the weapon records stored on the mount itself (not in magazines on the mount.)
New Mount wrapper method:
mount:setExactWeaponQuantity(string wpn_guid, integer quantity) sets weapon current quantity and returns the resulting quantity. (Cannοt be set higher than the mount maximum)
Usage examples:

Change quantities on ready-to-fire weapon records:
Manipulate aircraft loadout weapons:
[Lua] Fixed issues involving posturing via LUA Code involving Unknown Contacts
[Lua] Added: Exposed support mission waypoint in unit.course
[Lua] Tweak: ScenEdit_ImportScenarioFromXML now accepts FILENAME as table argument
[Lua] Fixed: Error while adding satellite via Lua.
[Lua] Tweak: Added DBID as an option on :filterOnComponent .
Example: u:filterOnComponent('sensor',1650)
[Lua] Added angleOnBowToUnit() method to Lua ActiveUnit wrapper
ANALYSIS & EVENT EXPORT
Includes the v1.06 version of the Floating License Server, with various tweaks & fixes for improved reliability.
[CLI]: The command-line version now supports the option to export the message log. To enable it, the switch “–savemessagelog” must be included in the CLI invocation.
FIXED: SQLite export error when weapon runs out of energy.
FIXED: Slowdown when repeatedly loading a scenario for iterative analysis (due to Lua sandbox-related memory leak)
FIXED: In some cases the program could crash due to out-of-memory errors because the in-RAM export queues would balloon to very large numbers. This is now fixed by “throttling” simulation execution until all events can be written out to their destinations.
FIXED: If multiple instances of CPE were started on the same machine, and all of them were configured with the Lua TCP/IP socket listening on the same port, a crash would occur.
FIXED: CLI mode does not use the default Lua socket port.
FIXED: The Floating License Manager sometimes generates an error if the reservations database file is not properly read/written.
Added support for Tacview’s new MaxFrameRate switch, when using the integrated real-time streaming feature.
CONNECTIVITY / INTEROPERABILITY & MECHANICS OVERRIDES
NEW FEATURE: Lua Event Hooks. Lua event-hooks provide a new mechanism for selectively overriding or extending built-in simulation steps. Compared to existing options for mechanics overrides, they provide greater flexibility and complete isolation from the CPE development team (ie. Overrides can be developed without any knowledge / involvement / assistance from the dev team). For details and instructions on how to use them, please consult the CPE v2.1 user manual, section “Mechanics Overrides – Lua Event Hooks”.
Added new DIS connector option: Multicast IP address. This is defined in [WritableRoot]\Config\SimConnect.ini , like this:
When this config value is not specified or completely missing, the DIS connector instead defaults to broadcasting.
MULTIPLAYER
If the MP server runs a scenario that uses a customized (non-registered) database file, each client who connects to the MP session will automatically receive a copy of the DB file. This eliminates the need to manually distribute custom DB files prior to an MP session.
Client instances who connect to an MP session will temporarily assume a PE-Premium tier license, regardless of the tier on their local license file. Once they exit the MP session they resume their normal assigned license tier. This change makes it possible to run MP clients using customized DBs, run in an isolated (not Internet-connected) network and other Premium-only capabilities.
UI TWEAK: The player login information remains on-screen.
UI TWEAK: The “server processing” progress box has been moved to the lower left of the map area.
CONTENT UPDATES & ADDITIONS
Added licensing support for the “Kashmir Fire” and “Red Tide” campaign sets.
Includes updated versions of official scenarios.
Includes all current Tacview 3D models and updated association files.
Includes the v489-492 releases of the DB3000 database, and the v490-492 releases of the CWDB database.
